My favorite route: Naples - Ercolano - Pompeii by train

#myfavoriteroute One of my favorite routes in Italy is the journey from Naples to Pompeii by train. It’s a perfect mix of history, local life, and scenic travel — and you can do it all affordably using the railway. From Naples, you have two main train options: the state-run Trenitalia, which stops at Pompeii’s main station, or the more local Circumvesuviana, which offers frequent departures and stops closer to the archaeological sites. I started my day in Naples, a city full of energy, narrow alleys, street food, and history. After grabbing a quick espresso and sfogliatella, I boarded the Circumvesuviana train at Napoli Garibaldi. The ride is lively, often filled with locals and travelers alike. A great stop along the way is Ercolano (Herculaneum). Smaller and better preserved than Pompeii, it offers a quieter, more intimate look at ancient Roman life. It's an easy walk from the train station. The final stop, Pompeii Scavi, brings you right to the ruins. I spent hours wandering the vast city frozen in time, from its villas and temples to streets marked by chariot wheels.
