The Shadowless Stupa of Nakhon City

Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan or Wat Phra That is a sacred ancient site of Nakhon Si Thammarat. It is an important religious site of Theravada Buddhism and a symbol of the province. Wat Phra Mahathat is a first-class royal temple, the Woramahawihan. The Phra Borommathat Chedi enshrines the relics of the Lord Buddha, the tooth relic or the left crystal tooth, which attracts Buddhists from all over the world to pay homage continuously. There is another strange but true story about Phra Borommathat Chedi, which is that this chedi has Lanna architecture, despite being located in a southern province. The highlight is the top of the chedi, which is covered in real gold. There is also another amazing thing that people call the Phra Borommathat without shadow because the chedi does not cast a shadow on the ground, no matter where the sunlight shines. No one has been able to find the answer to why, making this Phra Borommathat Chedi one of the unseen places in Thailand that you must visit. When you come to Wat Phra That, it would be incomplete to not mention “Chatukam Ramathep”. During the years 1997-2009 This is the period when “Chatukam Ramathep” was most popular. When entering the Phra Song Ma temple, in addition to seeing the stucco sculpture of the Phra Song Ma, there are also two “Chatukam Ramathep” deities as floating statues sitting next to the stairs leading up to the courtyard around the chedi (on the 17th-18th steps). They sit with their knees raised (right-left). The names of the deities are inscribed on granite slabs. One is named “Khattukam” and the other is named “Ramthep”. Both are deities who protect the Phra Maha That Chedi and the Buddha’s relics. Originally, it seemed that when people went to pay homage to the Phra Maha That Chedi, they did not pay much attention to the two deities. However, when the Jatukam phenomenon occurred, people continuously traveled to pay homage and make wishes.
