Tochoji Temple

Tochoji Temple is a hidden gem in Fukuoka that I stumbled upon, and I’m so glad I did! The highlight here is the massive wooden Buddha statue, the largest of its kind in Japan. The details on the Buddha are breathtaking, and the peaceful ambiance of the temple makes it a perfect place for quiet reflection. There’s also an underground passage representing the journey to enlightenment—it’s pitch dark, which was an unforgettable experience! The temple grounds are small but well-maintained, with a beautiful five-story pagoda that looks stunning in photos. Unlike some of the more touristy shrines, this place feels more intimate and spiritual. It’s located in the Hakata area, making it easy to visit alongside other attractions. If you appreciate Buddhist temples and want to experience something unique in Fukuoka, Tochoji is a must-visit. Definitely one of my favorite stops!
