🐟 Touching the Tip of Honshu – Maguro Monument at Oma

Visiting the Maguro Monument at Oma was a surprisingly meaningful moment on our road trip—it marks the northernmost tip of Honshu island, and that alone was reason enough for us to stop by. There’s something quite special about standing at the edge of a country, knowing you’re at the final stretch of the main island. The tuna statue was larger than expected and came with an interesting backstory—it was erected in 1994, commemorating the catch of a massive 440kg Pacific bluefin tuna right in the Tsugaru Strait. Oma is famous for its high-quality tuna, and this statue proudly celebrates that legacy. There’s also a monumental marker confirming your location at the northernmost point, making it a perfect photo opportunity. On clear days, you can even see Hakodate across the channel—a reminder of how close Hokkaido really is.
