🌄 Enchanting Depths – Kiyotsu Gorge (Tunnel of Light)

Visiting Kiyotsu Gorge was an unforgettable experience—nature and art blended seamlessly to create a breathtaking sight. Known as one of Japan’s three great gorges, its sheer, V-shaped cliffs and dramatic columnar jointed rock formations are officially designated as a National Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. Instead of the old, dangerous cliff paths, a 750-meter underground tunnel—originally built in 1996—now offers safe passage past several viewing platforms. In 2018, this tunnel was transformed into the “Tunnel of Light,” an immersive art installation designed by MAD Architects. Drawing inspiration from the five elements of nature, the tunnel features playful and reflective spaces such as the capsule restroom, dewdrop-shaped mirrors, and the awe-inspiring “water mirror” at the final viewpoint. There, the stainless-steel walls and shallow pool create a surreal mirrored illusion of the surrounding gorge. The entire experience takes around 40 to 60 minutes round trip. The walkway is flat and accessible for all ages. There’s a cozy footbath, a café, and a souvenir shop near the entrance (note: some facilities may be closed during winter).
