A day in Goreme, temples in the rock and sky-high views

#June Travel Support Fund Goreme was a quieter and more wonderful town than I thought. Before the sun rose, when hot air balloons filled the sky, it felt like the whole landscape had stopped. Sitting on a hill or terrace in the town and having a cup of coffee while looking at the sky parade was the highlight of my trip to Turkey. At the Goreme Open Air Museum, I could feel the breath of the past in the monasteries and churches carved out of the rock. Each mural had time, and the caves filled with sunlight felt like a mysterious space rather than a simple tourist attraction. During the day, I walked through the Fairy Chimney Alley, ate jar kebabs at a cave restaurant, and stopped by a local craft shop. In the evening, I finished the day watching the sunset.
