Chōhō-ji Temple

Chōhō-ji Temple is dedicated to Enma, the King of Hell. It was founded by Haruko, the daughter of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and wife of Emperor Kanmu. After Emperor Kanmu's death, she became a nun and established this temple. The current head priest is also a nun. Historically, when Emperor Go-Daigo moved to Yoshino, this temple served as a temporary imperial palace. Every year on May 18th, the statues of Enma and the Eleven-Faced Kannon are unveiled. The head priest told me that this Eleven-Faced Kannon statue was brought back by Tamuramaro during his expedition to the Emishi. Quite impressive.
