It was one of the earliest Khmer pagodas built in Ayutthaya, with a total of 198 pagodas. Unfortunately, in 1767, Ayutthaya was invaded and destroyed by Myanmar, and only the ruins of Wat Mahathat were left, with only a few complete Buddha statues left. The most famous and popular attraction at Wat Mahathat is of course the "Head of Buddha in the Tree". The Buddha's head looks calm and composed, blending into the fig tree.
