It used to be the residence of the king before being transformed into a temple during the reign of King Borommatrailokanat. Wat Phra Si Sanphet is similar to Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram (Wat Phra Kaew) today because it is a temple in the palace area. There are no monks residing there.
