Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Castellón (Region) The town of San Mateo is the capital of the historic Baixmestrat Land, located in the north of the province of Castellón. Due to its historical-artistic importance, the city center was declared a cultural object. A few kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea and the Costa del Sol we find this historic town. These lands contain olive groves, almond orchards, and wheat fields and were ruled by the Knights of Montesa in the Middle Ages. In fact, this town, the residence of the Grand Master and the capital of the Maestrago, attracted many artisans and cattle breeders who turned San Mateu into an interesting commercial center, even able to export wool to the famous textile mills of Florence. A rich artistic heritage bears witness to this economic prosperity, with ancestral homes and palaces alternating with Romanesque and Gothic religious buildings. The main square of the arcades, also known as the Plaza Mayor, is a great starting point for exploring the many streets that begin there. One of the most typical images of this town is the hexagonal tower of the Archpriest's Church. The church combines Romanesque and Gothic elements, as can be seen in its two facades, with high buttresses and a central nave. The journey through the streets of the town of São Mateus takes visitors to interesting monuments, among which are ecclesiastical buildings such as the Augustinian Monastery and the Sanctuary of the Sea of ​​Angels, as well as civil buildings such as the Palace of Borul and the Villores.
