I was surprised to learn that konpeito (confetti candy) comes from the Portuguese word "confeito"!! There is a shop that still makes confetti using traditional methods. It's called Pastelaria Briosa and is located in the ancient city of Coimbra. The inside of the shop is a normal cafe, but you can buy bags of confetti.
