Medieval Castle Ruins of Santorini

The Venetian Castle of Akrotiri (Καστέλι Ακρωτηρίου; Venetian Castle of Akrotiri) is located in the center of Akrotiri town and is the most prominent building in the area, as well as its main attraction. The pathway leading to the castle is lined only with residential houses, with no shops or restaurants, giving it a particularly simple and tranquil atmosphere. During the centuries of Venetian rule over the Aegean islands (13th to 18th centuries), the Venetians built numerous castles on the island. These castles, known as "Καστέλι" in Greek, were constructed with thick walls, fortresses, watchtowers, and narrow streets. They were designed to slow down invaders as much as possible and make it easier for defenders to resist attacks. After Santorini fell into the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1579, the castle gradually fell into disrepair. A major earthquake in 1956 further destroyed most of its structure, leaving only the entrance and some stone walls relatively intact. The castle was not only a military fortress but also the center of the local community, often housing residences, churches, shops, and other public facilities within its walls.
