Aqueduct of Segovia (Acueducto de Segovia) – A Roman Masterwork Sculpted by Time and Stone

#June Travel Support Fund 🏛️ The grandeur and state of preservation of architecture The Roman aqueduct, a two-story arch structure standing proudly across the old city of Segovia, is approximately 728m long and 28.5m high, making it a natural starting point for your trip right from the entrance of the city. . This structure, built around the 1st century, is made up of over 24,000 granite blocks, laid down by gravity and intricate combinations without mortar, and it is truly amazing that it has remained solid for nearly 2,000 years. ⸻ 🧱 Roman waterway – the path of the water of life This aqueduct, which brings water from the mountains near the town to the city, was designed as a route that connected the waterway for a distance of approximately 17km, and is like a ‘gigantic waterway sculpture’ that has preserved both historical function and aesthetics. ⸻ 🎞️ The symbol of the central square – a space in a photograph where time has stopped When passing through Plaza del Azoguejo, the scenery of hundreds of tons of stones forming an arch shape under your feet looks like a movie set. When standing in the square, it is no exaggeration to say that the crowds passing between the arches, the small scenery of the surrounding cafes, and the photos taken in time are all in harmony. ⸻ ⚙️ The story of elaborate composition and preservation It is built with a double-layer structure with 167 arches, 75 on the bottom and 44 on the top. Some of the arches were safely maintained after restoration work during the reign of Queen Isabella (15th century). It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, and it still remains in excellent condition today through traffic restrictions and preservation work.
