Kakunodate Samurai District, Akita

#cherryblossom25 Walking through Kakunodate’s Samurai District during cherry blossom season felt like stepping into Edo-era Japan. The black wooden fences of old samurai homes contrast beautifully with the soft pink of the shidarezakura (weeping cherry trees), and it’s one of the most photogenic places I’ve ever been. This spot came highly recommended in the #cherryblossom25 thread, and it did not disappoint. I loved how the sakura framed the narrow roads, and how the petals drifted slowly onto the old stone paths. I rented a kimono for the day, which added to the whole historical vibe — and yes, I got plenty of pics! The locals were super welcoming, offering sakura tea and traditional sweets. You also get that peaceful, small-town feel that’s hard to find in the bigger cities. Kakunodate isn’t just a cherry blossom spot — it’s a cultural experience. This place is now one of my personal favorites on the #cherryblossom25 journey.
