Ancient religious and university buildings

A good example is the beautiful historical-artistic site consisting of the University, the Ducal Pantheon and the University Church, which are located on the promontory of this Andalusian town. In the university’s dimly lit structure, the Renaissance arcaded courtyard, the Mudejar coffered ceiling of the central hall, and the frescoes in the degree and lecture rooms capture the visitor’s attention. The Collegiate Church of Santa María in Asunción (XVI century), in the style of plate decoration, houses a fine canvas by José de Ribera, “El Españoleto” (Museum of Religious Art). The panels were made for the Duke of Ossuna when he was Governor of Naples. Another Spanish Baroque master, Juan de Mesa, was responsible for sculpting the image of Christ of Mercy in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Next to the Collegiate Church is the Ducal Pantheon, where the Duke of Osuna is buried.
