Xujiahui Academy is a comprehensive library located next to the Xujiahui Church in Xuhui District, Shanghai. The atrium runs through three floors and is brightly lit, reflecting the design concept of combining Chinese and Western styles and integrating the past and the present. The atrium of the academy is designed in basilica style and features a 3D-printed "Gate of Enlightenment" art installation, symbolizing the enlightenment of books and wisdom. It is a museum that displays the history of cultural and artistic exchanges between China and the West. It was built on the original site of the Tushanwan Orphanage. The museum was established to showcase the historical development of Tushanwan from 1864 to 1960, especially the historical picture of the integration of Chinese and Western cultures. The treasure of the Tushanwan Museum is the "Chinese Archway", which was carved in 1913 by orphans led by Ge Chengliang, director of the woodworking department of the Tushanwan Orphanage Institute, over a period of nearly two years. It has also participated in many World Expos. The archway is 5.8 meters high and 5.2 meters wide, and is carved entirely from teak. It is a very precious work of art. The archway went through a process of being lost overseas and restored, and finally returned to Shanghai in 2009, becoming a landmark exhibit of the Tushanwan Museum. The Tushanwan Museum also displays precious items from the Tushanwan Orphanage period, including the Tushanwan archway that participated in the World Expo, stained glass carved cabinets and other cultural treasures.
