The former residence of Mr. Cai Yuanpei is located at No. 16, Lane 303, Huashan Road, Jing'an District, Shanghai. It is a three-story residence. The house was listed as a Shanghai-level cultural relic protection unit in 1984. On March 11, 2021, it was selected into the first batch of revolutionary cultural relics list of Shanghai. This three-story western-style building is very consistent with the architectural style of old Shanghai at that time. I don’t know if it’s because of the built-in filter, but you can feel a hint of bookishness just from the appearance. There are also some plants planted on both sides of the house, which is friendly and elegant. The former residence has a construction area of ​​526 square meters and a garden area of ​​671 square meters. It was rented by Mr. Cai Yuanpei before. The original owner of the real estate was sold and bought by Sheng Pancheng (the third son of Sheng Xuanhuai, a great bureaucrat in the late Qing Dynasty) in the name of the American-owned Yizhong Real Estate Company for Kong Xiangxi. After liberation, it was managed by the People’s Government. It will continue to be used by Mr. Cai Yuanpei's relatives for residence. The first floor is now used as an exhibition hall for the former residence, and the second and third floors are where Mr. Cai Yuanpei's children live. The furnishings of the former residence remain basically the same as when Mr. Cai Yuanpei was alive. The exhibition hall covers an area of ​​210 square meters and the exhibition is divided into three parts: 1. "From studying hard to saving the country through education"; 2. "The founder of modern education and science in China"; 3. "Aiming at national revolution, awakening to democracy and freedom". Also on display are cultural relics such as the typewriter and suitcases he used during his lifetime.
