EMI's Little Red Building, the memory of China's record history.

The EMI building, with its striking brick-red exterior, is located on the north side of Xujiahui Park, close to Yuqing Road. In the 1910s, the French company EMI purchased land and built a factory here. At the end of 1920, China's first record manufacturing plant was completed in Xujiahui and officially started production, thus starting the history of record production in China. From the original French-owned EMI Company, to the location of the Shanghai branch of China Record Corporation in New China, and then to the cultural space today, in this turbulent century-long journey, the strongest voice of the era coming from the EMI building is undoubtedly "The March of the Volunteers". This small building was once the central nervous system of EMI. The ground floor is used for recording and reception, and the second floor is the editing room. The third floor is the company boss's living room and bedroom. On the wall on the ground floor there is a framed copy of the recording instructions, dated 1983, which suggests the original recording studio was still in use until then. 🕓Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 9:00-17:00 (no admission after 16:30); closed on Monday (except national holidays).
