It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, a university directly under the central government, and a Double First-Class, Project 985, and Project 211 university. The school was formerly the German Medical School founded by Erich Paulun in Shanghai in 1907. In 1908, it was renamed Tongji German Medical School. In 1912, it was combined with Tongji German Engineering School to form Tongji Medical and Engineering School. In 1923, it was officially named Tongji University. In 1927, it became the National Tongji University, one of the earliest seven national universities in China.
