Old Money Vibes in Shanghai | Room Tour at The St. Regis Shanghai Jingan

I'd seen so many negative reviews about this St. Regis property online that I felt somewhat apprehensive before checking in, but the experience turned out to be surprisingly good. The hotel underwent renovations last year, and it shows in both the facilities and service. I booked a base room for just over 1,000 RMB through the Le You program and successfully negotiated an upgrade to the Manora Skyline Room during pre-arrival. This room type is spacious without partitions and offers direct views of the Bund and Lujiazui skyline. The standard suite is only 65 sqm with no views, so I wouldn't recommend it. The hotel embodies St. Regis' signature old-money aesthetic - the moment you enter and see the viral celebrity doorman uncle, that aristocratic vibe hits you. The lobby features two grand crystal chandeliers that, while not as opulent as The Middle House's, still exude luxury. Live piano performances in public areas often draw guests to linger. Rooms blend American and Chinese design elements with exquisite lacquered cabinets, chandeliers, and vanity mirrors. The generously sized bathroom uses multiple full-length mirrors to amplify the space. Service exceeded expectations - from guided entry and luggage handling to seated check-in. As it was my birthday, the room had simple decorations prepared in advance along with a cake, and I received multiple "Happy Birthday" greetings during my stay. The only hiccup was slow butler service, with deliveries taking nearly 30 minutes. But overall, the minor flaws couldn't overshadow the experience - for this prime location and price point, service standards were more than adequate. Dining was a mixed bag: breakfast selection was mediocre with obvious staff shortages, leading to empty food stations and guests chasing staff for refills. The St. Regis Bar on the ground floor feels like a missed opportunity without utilizing high-floor views. Their signature Bloody Mary, the "Jing Mary," incorporates osmanthus and pistachio for a lighter, more approachable flavor profile.
