The most comfortable spot was by the window, offering a view of the quiet little street below, where streetlights had already lit up, casting silhouettes on the historic buildings across the way. After sitting for a while, my stomach growled. Time to hunt for food! The small streets near the hostel were like a maze, bathed in dim yellow light with dancing tree shadows. The air was filled with enticing aromas—sizzling stir-fries, the sweetness of freshly baked bread. Following my instincts, I stumbled upon a cozy noodle shop glowing with warm light and bustling with customers—a good sign. I ordered a bowl of shredded pork with pickled vegetable noodles. The steaming bowl arrived, the broth flavorful, the pickled vegetables crisp. Slurping it down warmed my stomach and soul. Not wanting to wander far after eating, I grabbed a bottle of water and some snacks from a nearby convenience store. Slowly making my way back, the hostel’s colonial-style building stood in the night, its windows radiating a comforting golden glow. Back in the common area, a few more people had gathered—two girls chatting softly, another typing on a laptop. I grabbed my water and headed straight to my room. Most of my roommates were already there: one scrolling through her phone in bed, another watching a movie with headphones, and a third organizing her things. We exchanged nods and smiles—a relaxed, unawkward atmosphere. A hot shower and comfy clothes later, I climbed into my bunk, drew the curtain, and turned on the small bedside lamp. The warm light illuminated my little cocoon. Scrolling through photos from the day—the skyline along the Bund, the charming facades of old buildings I’d stumbled upon, the hostel’s beautiful tiles and stained-glass windows—I felt the miles in my soles but also a sense of fulfillment. The room was quiet, just the soft rustling of sheets and steady breathing. Outside, the city hummed with distant traffic. Propped on my pillow, I browsed my phone, pondering tomorrow’s aimless wanderings.
