Shaoxing's Dusuimen Gate: A Blend of Ancient and Modern Charm

Dusuimen, one of the nine original gates of Shaoxing's ancient city, served as both a land and water gate, a rare, multifunctional structure in China. Its unique design features four small gates and one main gate. The water gate allowed the passage of boats, making it a vital commercial hub for Shaoxing. In 2001, to preserve the city's historical landscape, the local government rebuilt Dusuimen near its original site, adhering to its historical form. Now located at the intersection of Huancheng East Road and the Huancheng River, adjacent to the Didang commercial district, it stands as a historical landmark within a modern city. Today, Dusuimen is not only a significant symbol of Shaoxing's ancient culture but also an integral part of modern life. As a component of the Grand Canal (Shaoxing section) World Cultural Heritage site, Dusuimen, along with the Bazhi Bridge and the ancient towpaths, carries the historical memory of Shaoxing as a "water city," showcasing a unique blend of ancient and modern charm.
