From the Wok to Your Plate: What Makes Fiie’s Cafe’s Nasi Ayam Goreng So Special

If you’ve ever wondered where to find a plate of nasi ayam goreng that truly hits the spot — look no further than Fiie’s Cafe, also known as Mr Grumpy Fried Chicken. Tucked in the heart of Singapore, this humble stall has built a reputation for serving up what many (myself included now!) consider the best nasi ayam goreng in town, and after trying it myself, I can 100% say — the hype is real. The Star of the Show: Fried Chicken The moment you place your order, you’ll notice the non-stop flow of orders being shouted out — a true sign of how popular this place is. But what really sets Fiie’s Cafe apart is how fresh the fried chicken is. Every piece is plated directly from the frying wok, ensuring that crispy-on-the-outside, juicy-on-the-inside perfection. You even get to choose between chicken thigh or breast, and honestly, either one will leave you satisfied. The chicken is beautifully seasoned, crispy without being greasy, and so tender inside. It pairs incredibly well with the rest of the components on the plate. Fragrant Rice & Fiery Sambal The rice is subtly aromatic, fluffy, and cooked just right — the ideal base for all the bold, rich flavours to come. But the real kicker? The sambal. It’s fiery, punchy, and addictive, adding just the right amount of heat and depth to tie everything together. Customise Your Plate Starting from just $6.50, you already get a generously portioned plate of nasi ayam goreng, but what makes the experience even better is being able to customise your meal with a variety of tasty add-ons. I topped mine with sambal quail eggs, begedil, and sambal hotdog — all super flavourful and satisfying. The sambal quail eggs were a nice surprise, offering a bit of extra spice and richness, while the begedil added a lovely potato texture, and the sambal hotdog was an unexpected treat with its smoky, slightly sweet kick. Why It’s Worth the Hype Now I totally get why there are never-ending orders. The constant stream of customers is a testament to how good the food is. With its affordable prices, generous portions, and perfect balance of flavours, Fiie’s Cafe has rightfully earned its reputation. The fried chicken is fresh, the rice is fragrant, and the sambal? Absolutely addictive.
