Grosniez Castle, Jersey

Grosnietz Castle is a 14th-century castle ruin in the parish of Saint Ouen, located in Grosnietz, on the northwest corner of Jersey, a British Crown dependency in the Channel Islands. Sir John Desroches ordered the castle to be built around 1330, around the start of the Hundred Years' War between England and France. The castle was intended to provide a refuge for local peasants from attacks by the French. The walls are of local granite, thickest on the landward side. The castle is located on top of a cliff 60 meters above sea level, which means that the three sides facing the sea have a natural barrier, and the moat dug into the rock provides protection for the side facing the land. Today, only the remains of the walls remain, with the main foundations still in place, and a drawbridge and gate protecting the gatehouse, which is the only significant relic that has survived and is difficult to capture. There are also traces of six more simple buildings. However, the castle had many weaknesses: there were no entrances and exits for counterattacks, and most importantly, there was no water source inside the castle. The French captured the castle in 1373 and 1381. The castle was probably last used for military purposes between 1461 and 1467 when Philippe de Carteret, Lord of Jersey, took control of the western parish of Jersey, including the castle, against the French who controlled the east, but it has been a ruin since the mid-16th century.
