Project Name: Kliphuis Wine Tasting Experience Center Design Team: Slee & Co Architects Area: 423 m² Location: Stellenbosch, South Africa Design Features: Project – Nestled in the beautiful Banhoek Valley of Stellenbosch, South Africa, the "Kliphuis" project is a prime example of site-specific architectural design. Designed by Slee & Co Architects, this 423-square-meter building seamlessly integrates with its stunning natural surroundings, showcasing a harmonious dialogue between architectural form and the landscape. The project's standout feature is its ingenious use of local materials and traditional construction techniques. The building's foundation is formed by extending existing terrace walls, using locally sourced stones laid in an informal, handcrafted manner. This approach not only anchors the building firmly to its site but also pays homage to the region's architectural heritage. Timber, all sourced from the farm's alien tree removal program, plays a starring role throughout the project. From the roof structure to the floors, walls, and even custom furniture, the use of locally harvested timber creates a warm, textured experience that echoes the natural world outside. The design's sensitivity to the environment is further reflected in the low, dark corrugated roofs that appear to float above the stone walls. Large retractable glass doors blur the boundaries between inside and out, allowing the tasting area to naturally extend onto the spacious verandas. This indoor-outdoor connection not only maximizes the breathtaking views of the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains but also enhances the wine-tasting experience by immersing visitors in the terroir that gives Capensis wines their unique character. Team – Founded in 1986 by Johann Slee, Slee & Co. Architects has become a significant force in the South African architectural design scene. Originally based in Johannesburg, the firm relocated to Stellenbosch 17 years ago, establishing a studio in the historic Dorp Street. Their project at 101 Dorp Street won the 2011 Cape Institute for Architecture Award, showcasing their ability to seamlessly integrate modern design into a historical context. The firm's design philosophy centers on creating a vernacular architecture that respects the client's vision and local culture while embracing cutting-edge technology. Their buildings draw inspiration from the earth, using muted tones and richly textured finishes that respond to South Africa's abundant sunlight.
