Mati Temple in Zhangye, Gansu Province, is worth a visit.

🌈 Mati Temple Grottoes are located in Linsong Mountain, more than 80 km southeast of Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, Gansu Province. The grottoes include Beisi Temple, Nansi Temple, Qianfodong Temple, Jinta Temple, and the Upper, Middle, and Lower Guanyin Caves. The distance between each of these sites ranges from several kilometers to more than 10 km. As the stone of the mountain cliffs is coarse red sandstone, which is not suitable for carving, most of the statues are made of clay. 👍 In 1996, the State Council announced that Mati Temple Grottoes were included in the fourth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. Mati Temple Grottoes were first built in the Jin Dynasty by Guo Yu from Dunhuang and his disciples. It was first used as Guo's retreat and lecture site. Later, people expanded it and added Buddha statues. At its peak, there were more than 300 monks. During the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, it was renamed Puguang Temple. The golden saddle and dragon robe in the temple were bestowed by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty.
