Title: Suwon – A City Where Ancient Walls Guard Modern Life

#cityplaybook #localguides #cityplaybook #postandearn Just 30 kilometers from Seoul, Suwon is a perfect blend of heritage, local charm, and cultural experiences. What drew me to Suwon initially was the famous Hwaseong Fortress, but what made me stay longer was how the city lets its history breathe through daily life—without feeling like a museum. The highlight of my trip was walking along the Hwaseong Fortress Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It wraps around the city like a guardian, offering amazing panoramic views and a fascinating glimpse into Joseon Dynasty architecture and defense. I started early in the morning, and the cool breeze paired with the rhythmic clack of my shoes on ancient stone felt meditative. Inside the fortress area, I explored the Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, which used to host royal retreats. The palace is beautifully preserved and often has traditional performances or guards’ reenactments—great for photos and immersion! To fuel up, I went to Suwon’s famous Chicken Street. This isn’t just hype—the fried chicken here is next level. I tried crispy garlic soy chicken with a cold beer from one of the many bustling eateries, and it honestly topped any chicken I’ve had in Korea. Beyond history and food, Suwon is also quite modern. The Samsung Innovation Museum gives insight into Korea’s tech rise, and nearby art cafes offer cozy breaks. In the evening, I walked around Gwanggyo Lake Park, where LED-lit bridges and quiet water reflected the city lights—perfect for winding down. Best Time to Visit Spring (April–May) or Autumn (September–October) for great walking weather and fortress views. Helpful Tips Wear comfy shoes—walking the fortress wall involves some light hiking. The Suwon City Tour Bus is a great, affordable way to see major spots. Go early to Chicken Street—it gets packed with locals by dinnertime!
