Tokyo Zojoji Temple | Tokugawa Ieyasu and the Thousand-Year Agreement of the Pure Land Sect

Zojoji Temple, whose full name is Sanenzan Kodoin Zojoji Temple, is named after the mountain Sanenzan. Its predecessor was the Shingon sect's Komyoji Temple, which was founded by Kukai's disciple Sorei in a shell mound in Musashi Province. In 1393, the eighth patriarch of the Pure Land Sect, Master Shengcong, took over and converted it into a Pure Land Sect temple, renaming it Zojoji. In 1590, the twelfth abbot, Master Cun Ying, accepted the conversion of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the large monastery was built and expanded. It became one of the Tokugawa family mausoleums and the first of the 18 tanlins in Kanto, and it has prospered ever since. When you enter Zojoji Temple, you will see the Three Gates of Liberation, exquisite paintings and precious scriptures, all of which are designated cultural properties of Japan.
