Tongariro alpine crossing amidst volcanoes - New Zealand

19.4km day hike across an active volcanic landscape - that’s the Tongariro alpine crossing in the middle of north island, New Zealand. Considered one of the top 10 1-day hike in the world, I had to give my shot in conquering it as an amateur hiker. It wasn’t easy - rough terrains and slippery ice on certain steep parts, slippery terrain after red crater, the Devil’s staircase, long distance 20km, almost sub-zero temperatures at the red crater during my hike in end April 2024. This trail is not for the weak - you have to be well prepared! Bring food, water, layers, gloves, adequate hiking equipment. Of course, I was rewarded with majestic views I’ve never seen before in my lifetime. Catching the sunrise, the silhouette of the volcanoes before sunrise, the red crater, the emerald lakes.
