Exploring the Artistic Legacy of Master Carpenter Suwa no Washirō

When visiting shrines and temples, one cannot help but be captivated by the exquisite carvings on gates and main halls. The "Keiun Gate" is one such example. Suwa no Washirō was born in 1744 into the Tsukahara family, known for their barrel-making craft, in Suwa, Shinshu. However, Washirō himself did not wish to continue the family trade and instead had a passion for painting. One day, Washirō became an apprentice to Tachikawa Kohei Tomifusa, a master carpenter serving the shogunate in Edo, where he honed his skills. Today, many of Washirō's works are designated as cultural properties by the prefecture or the nation. Incidentally, to the right of the Keiun Gate, there is a "magic mallet." It is said that if you chant sutras and swing the mallet, your wishes will come true. After offering a donation, I tried chanting and swinging the mallet, but it was surprisingly heavy.
