After a brief storm, I arrived at Howard Castle, reminiscent of the setting in 'Brideshead Revisited'. The car careened down the estate's hill, revealing a gothic gatehouse and obelisk amidst a desolate landscape, instantly transporting me into the story. Like Charles in the film, I was merely a fleeting visitor to the castle. Yet, the endless summer stretched ahead, filled with youthful exuberance, inviting me to indulge in its luxury, grandeur, and wildness, and to seek the shadow of Sebastian. What would Sebastian do? If only there was that endless summer to savor solitude, with fruit always ripe, despite the inevitable retreat, disappearance, and loss. Even as we possess it, we sense it slipping away like sand or clouds. But we once had an idyllic pastoral life, reaching its peak, and the downhill path that follows is inevitable. Yet, there is no regret. You were too beautiful, too pure, while I was too rational, too distant, too worldly. I couldn't understand your intricate ties with faith and the past, which cannot be easily severed by worldly love or escape. Charles, your biggest problem is that you don't belong anywhere. You can't fit into the present. Charles is you and me. Inside Howard Castle, you'll be awed by Baroque statues, decorations, and murals, while outside, the wildness of the Four Winds Temple, lake, and gardens captivates you. It's a complex, contradictory place, buried with stories and memories. Inside, I encountered two elegant country gentlemen singing, bringing tears to my eyes. Paradoxically, you can't tolerate Charles and Sebastian's worldly yet peaceful aging. The castle, one of the top three estates in England, has been under restoration since a fire, and now hosts contemporary art exhibitions.
