Dahong Kingdom Palace Site

The Dahong Kingdom Palace Site is located on Wenming Street, Bafang Village, Zhenlong Town, Xinyi City, Maoming City, Guangdong Province. It was originally the Xinyi Confucian Temple, facing south, built in the Yuan Dynasty, rebuilt in the fourth year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1739), and now has a double-eave hip roof Dacheng Hall, five rooms wide and four rooms deep, as well as Genxing Gate, Xian Guan Archway, Shengyu Archway, etc., with an area of 3,428 square meters. In the fourth year of the Xianfeng reign (1854), Chen Jingang, the leader of the Tiandihui, led an uprising in his hometown of Fanhuwei, Sanshui County. Finally, he besieged Sanshui and Guangzhou, fought in northern Guangdong, Hunan, and the border between Guangdong and Guangxi, and his army grew to tens of thousands. In Huaiji, he established the Dahong Kingdom and called himself the King of Nanxing. In March of the eleventh year of the Xianfeng reign (1861), he captured Xinyi City and rebuilt the Dahong Kingdom, using the Confucian Temple as the palace. More than two years later, he was not afraid of the encirclement and suppression of the Qing army and refused to surrender, and was killed by a traitor in the palace. The site is a precious relic commemorating Chen Jingang's response to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement and heroic spirit, reflecting the history of modern Guangdong peasant revolutionary struggle. In June 1989, the Guangdong Provincial People's Government announced the Dahong Kingdom Palace Site as a provincial cultural relic protection unit.
