Chawthatyi Reclining Buddha or Sweet-Eyed Reclining Buddha

The Chaukhtatgyi Reclining Buddha or the Sweet-Eyed Reclining Buddha is a large reclining Buddha that is known as one of the most beautiful reclining Buddhas in Burma. It is 66 meters long. Another highlight of this reclining Buddha is its eyes, which are beautifully shiny and delicate, resembling real ones. On the soles of its feet, there are 108 auspicious symbols carved into them. This reclining Buddha was first built in 1899 by Ser Pota, a wealthy Burmese Buddhist. However, its construction at that time was not as beautiful as it is today. On the contrary, the original Buddha image had a grumpy face. In 1950, the caretakers of the temple unanimously agreed that it should be demolished and rebuilt. This is the origin of the beautiful and lively Sweet-Eyed Reclining Buddha that we see today.
