Introduction to Nanjin Pass Grand Canyon: • Overview Located in the middle and upper reaches of the Xialao River Basin on the north bank of the Xiling Gorge, Yiling District, Yichang City, Hubei Province, it lies at the junction of Xiaoxita Subdistrict, Letian River, and Huanghua Towns. It is 20 km from both downtown Yichang and the Three Gorges Dam, covering a total area of 92 sq km. The canyon stretches 18 km, with a hiking trail of about 8 km. It is 3–50 m wide, with cliffs on both sides reaching 100–250 m high. The forest coverage rate is 92.8%, and it features typical karst topography. • Natural Landscapes ◦ Waterfalls: There are six waterfalls, including Chantan Waterfall, Erdieshui Waterfall, Heitan Waterfall, Hongyan Luolei Waterfall, Feitian Waterfall, and Yixian Waterfall. Chantan Waterfall is known for its perfect form, Erdieshui Waterfall for its combination of pools and cascades, Hongyan Luolei Waterfall for its resemblance to a beautiful woman playing the guqin, and Feitian Waterfall for its majestic momentum, earning it the title of "Treasure of the Gorge." ◦ Unique Canyon Sections: The canyon consists of three sections: Hongyan Gorge, Feitian Gorge, and Lamei Gorge. Hongyan Gorge is steep, Feitian Gorge is deep and serene, and Lamei Gorge is known for its beauty. ◦ Deep Pools: Among the eighteen pools, Qianlong Pool, Heitan Pool, and Chang Pool are the most famous. Chang Pool, located deep within Feitian Gorge, has a wide surface area of about 100 m, making it the widest and deepest pool in the canyon. • Cultural Landscapes ◦ Historical Relics: Ancient post roads, plank roads, and military training grounds bear witness to the vicissitudes of history. ◦ Myths and Legends: In ancient times, when Yu the Great's father, Gun, was controlling the floods here, he chained a dragon here, hence the name "Xialao River" (literally "Lower Chain River").
