Site of the Chahar Military Governor's Office

The Chahar Military Governor's Office was first built in 1762 during the Qing Dynasty. Among the three military governor's offices established in the Qing Dynasty (Rehe, Urumqi, and Chahar), the Chahar Military Governor's Office is the only surviving Qing-era military governor's complex. Its jurisdiction covered parts of present-day Inner Mongolia and northwestern Hebei. The central axis features, from south to north, the main gate, ceremonial gate, main hall, secondary hall, and inner quarters. The main gate, ceremonial gate, main hall, and secondary hall all have side rooms, while the secondary hall and rear quarters include wing rooms. As a key military and political site during the Qing Dynasty, the Chahar Military Governor's Office witnessed major historical transitions from the prosperous Qianlong era to the Republican period. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, 61 military governors had served here, followed by 8 military governors and 13 provincial government chairmen during the Republican era. After liberation, it became the seat of the Chahar Provincial People's Government.
