During this trip to France, I deliberately avoided big tourist cities and chose to go to Tréguier, a quiet town on the coast of Brittany. This small town full of medieval charm is truly a paradise for art lovers and slow-paced travelers. Walking in the cobblestone alleys, there are old wooden-framed houses and balconies with flower windows on both sides. Every photo looks like a postcard.
The most eye-catching landmark of the town is the Cathédrale Saint-Tugdual, a magnificent Gothic building. Inside, you can also see the reliquary of Saint Yves's relics, which is of great historical significance. When you are tired of shopping, go to the open-air cafe next to the square, order a cup of fragrant hot cocoa or local cider with fresh crepes, and leisurely bask in the sun and watch the pedestrians coming and going.
In addition, there is the magnificent Pink Granite Coast (Côte de Granit Rose) near the town. It is recommended to rent a bicycle or drive there. The sea views and rock shapes along the way are super dreamy. You can choose to stay in a local family inn (chambre d’hôte) in the evening and experience French dinner and warm hospitality.
Although Tréguier is not noisy, it is the tranquility and purity that allows people to really slow down and enjoy the true meaning of traveling without rushing. Highly recommended to those who like culture, scenery and in-depth travel!
Tréguier is a medieval town in Brittany, France, famous for its historical heritage and architectural heritage. The town originated as a settlement of monks in the 6th century and there are many well-preserved medieval buildings.
The core landmark, Cathedral Saint-Tugdual, is one of the most famous churches in Brittany. Its Gothic exterior and the exquisite carvings on the cloister showcase the architectural art of the 14th and 15th centuries, and the stained glass windows inside create a dreamy atmosphere.
The town's buildings are mainly made of stone, and residents paint their shutters in colors. Combined with the cobblestone streets and traditional timber-framed houses, it creates a typical Breton style. As for celebrities, the former residence and statue of 19th-century scholar Ernest Renan can be found in the area, and his ideas had a profound influence on French culture.
Geographically, Tréguier is located on the northwest coast of Brittany, with a deep-water port and convenient transportation.
