It has been a full ten years since the last time I came here. Standing in Thailand again and looking at Laos Island across the river, I am amazed by the changes. As I recall, the island was once a dusty sandy land where merchants built simple wooden houses to run their businesses. But now, what come into view are high-rise buildings and luxury resorts, and the former wooden houses and shops have been replaced with sturdy iron houses. On the way to Laos Island by boat, we saw many ships busy loading goods while China was releasing water, preparing to go north along the Mekong River to transport Thai goods to China for sale, and there were also Laotian cargo ships among them. Upon arrival at Laos Island, the local shop owners greeted us warmly. The proprietress, speaking fluent Chinese, recommended Lao beer, Lao cigarettes, Lao coffee and other specialty products to the tourists. Even the tour guide took the opportunity to purchase an affordable suitcase. Local residents said that today's Golden Triangle is no longer the drug den it used to be, but has developed a tourism industry thanks to its unique geographical location. For them, the current peaceful and stable lifestyle is what is most worth cherishing.
