This time, I decided to challenge myself by climbing to Gifu Castle and experiencing the beautiful forest journey. Anticipation at the Start Early in the morning, I took public transportation to Gifu City and then walked to the Kinka Ropeway Station following the signs. Along the way, I felt the tranquility and beauty around me, with lush greenery and fresh air invigorating my spirit. The ropeway ride took about ten minutes, and through the glass windows, I enjoyed the scenic views as the majestic landscape of Mount Kinka gradually unfolded before my eyes. The Challenge of the Hiking Route After reaching the upper ropeway station, I began my hike up the mountain. Although the distance to Gifu Castle was not long, it required some physical effort. The path was lined with dense trees and colorful flowers, prompting me to stop and savor the gifts of nature. Along the way, I encountered other hikers, and we encouraged each other, cheering each other on. I was curious to go and see the "Buddha in a cage" on the tourist information map in front of the station! I was so glad I went! Kiso Valley is located af south western Nagano, Japan, best known for Magome and Tsumago, beautifully preserved tradional villages. With one of the most famous hiking paths in all Japan, we set foot there on our quest for traditional Japan, away from temples and geisha sights. We highly recommend visiting the Kiso Valley, but a little preparation goes a long way. It’s important to have some historical and cultural knowledge and it’s useful to do a little planning because the area is a a bit remote and not as convenient as the bigger cities. I checked in to the Nagaragawa Onsen Hotel again and encountered heavy snow. From the 5th floor window, snowflakes were blooming, and Gifu Castle appeared and disappeared from view. I thought I wouldn't be able to go out the next day, but unexpectedly, the weather cleared up, the snow melted quickly, and the blue sky returned to the green mountains. #japantrip Impressive large buddha. 5 mins walk from entrance of Gifu castle. Small entrance fee. Not touristy. Opposite a pretty looking Jap western cafe Komeda. Free parking. Free sense of peace. The wooden Buddhist statue is great and worth the visit. The place is not tourist crowded. Bonus : the curly things on buddha head are snails that rest there to help shield buddha from sun and cold. It symbolises snail's compassion.

#japantrip A small cable car to bring you to the castle on the hilltop. The cable has no air con but the wind and great view can calm you down. The place to buy ticket is in the park and next to the parking lots. Easy to find. You can buy the round trip ticket to have small discount or just walk down from hilltop bit might cost you lots time and strength. Remember to stand on the south side of the car to see the whole Gifu city. The calecar is only 5-10 minutes to the hill top and operated every 15 minutes.

There are several well-maintained trails with clear signs to guide you. The castle itself is small, and there's a modest entrance fee. I definitely recommend hiking up to the top—it only takes about 30 minutes and is a fun way to enjoy the scenery.

The path up is a bit of a climb and slightly challenging (there are two paths, one more dangerous but shorter and one longer but safer and easier to climb). In addition, in the Theater, an oval screen measuring 4.5m in height and 13m in width, you can enjoy the realistic sensation of being on the battlefield through wind, vibration, light and sound effects. ■Sengoku Experience Corner (Gifu Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum, 2nd floor) #Becoming a Sengoku Warlord Put on a jinbaori (battle coat) and take a photo as a Sengoku warlord! This library was designed by Toyo Ito, and is a wonderful place where you can feel the warmth of wood as if you were in a forest. This is a library, but there are also Starbucks and Lawson next door, and there are food trucks in the plaza, so you can enjoy it at your leisure even if you're not going to the library. There are plenty of chairs and desks to sit and read books, and small children play in the kids' space, so it was a lovely, relaxing time.
