Chiang Mai's Version of Otaru Canal? Mae Kha Canal's Old Community Transformed into a Riverside Market.
Did you know that Chiang Mai has its own version of Otaru Canal called Khlong Mae Kha? Located in the southeast of Chiang Mai's old city area, Mae Kha Canal used to be a dirty and smelly drainage ditch. After renovation and transformation, it has turned into a hipster river with vendors lining both sides. The area is designed with a Japanese theme, giving it a unique Thai-Japanese fusion vibe, hence the name 'Chiang Mai's version of Otaru Canal.'
The Mae Kha Canal, which is less than a kilometer long, is a super relaxing market with many hipster specialty shops on both sides. You can find miscellaneous goods, clothing, street food, massage services, and street performances. The entire canal is beautifully planned and very photogenic, offering different charms during the day and night!
If you are tired of visiting Chiang Mai's temples and museums, consider taking a trip to Mae Kha Canal, especially at dusk when the sunset is the most beautiful. The night lights are also fantastic, making it a riverside market worth visiting.
