The pagoda in the middle of the water, Nong Khai Province
The Phra That Klang Nam, originally named Phra That La Nong, is one of the Phra That in the legend of Phra Urankathu, which contains the relics of the Lord Buddha. It enshrines the relics of the soles of nine Buddhas (Phra Phanom). The original pagoda was on the bank of the river in Wat Phra That Nong Khai. Later, it was eroded by the current and is now in the middle of the Mekong River, approximately 200 meters from the current shore. It can be clearly seen in the dry season.
From the underwater survey of the Archaeological Unit 7, it was found that the base of the pagoda is 17.2 meters wide on each side, with a taper at the base, and is approximately 28.5 meters high, broken into 3 pieces. It is assumed that it was built around the 19th-20th Buddhist century because its shape is most similar to Phra That Bang Phuan. In the book Urankathu or the Legend of Phra That Phanom, a section mentions the construction of Phra That La Nong, stating that this pagoda was built by 5 Arahants: Phra Maha Rattana Thera, Phra Chula Rattana Thera, Phra Maha Suwanna Prasat Thera, Phra Chula Suwanna Prasat Thera, and Phra Sangkhawicha Thera. All of them were disciples of Phra Phuttharakkhit, Phra Thammarakkhit, Phra Sangkharakkhit, the 3 Arahants, and the 5 Arahants. They invited the relics of the Lord Buddha from India together and invited them to be enshrined at 6 places together:
- Phra That Ho Pha Ho Pha Ban Sai Fong, Mueang Hat Sai Fong, Lao People's Democratic Republic
- Phra That Hua Nao, 29 relics, enshrined at Phra That Luang, Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic
- Phra Urankthat or chest relic, enshrined at Phra That Phanom, That Phanom District, Nakhon Phanom Province
- Phra That Bangkhon or stomach relic, enshrined at Phra That Bang Phuan, Wat Phra That Bang Phuan, Mueang District, Nong Khai
- Phra That Khiao Fang, 7 relics, enshrined at Phra That Phon Chik Wiang Ngua, Mueang District, Nong Khai
- Phra That of the right sole of the foot, 9 relics, enshrined at Phra That Mueang La or Phra That La Nong Amphoe, Mueang Nong Khai This Phra That La Nong is located in the middle of Wat That or Wat Siri Mahakatchai, Wat That community, Nong Khai Municipality. In 2109, King Chaiyachetthathirat of Lan Xang Kingdom built a great pagoda to cover the pagoda.
Later in 2300, the water in the river eroded the ground around Wat Phra That Nong Khai until only the pagoda remained in the middle of the water. Until 2390, the pagoda collapsed, leaving only the pagoda ruins.
