Pang Tong Palace, Mae Hong Son
Pang Tong Palace or "Pang Tong Highland Service and Development Center under the Royal Initiative" was established in 1980 as the second service and development center of the Royal Development Project in Mae Hong Son Province. It covers a total area of 5,353 rai and is located in Mok Champae Subdistrict, Mae Hong Son Province. It is used as a place for experimentation, research, and demonstration of hill tribe people in the highlands, including Ban Pang Tong (Tai Yai, Karen), Ban Na Pa Paek (Mong, Tai Yai), Ban Huai Makhuea Som, plant cultivation, and raising cold-weather animals to promote the people (Mong, Tai Yai), and Ban Ruam Thai (Tai Yai), most of whom are bordering Burma. The trip is not difficult. From Mae Hong Son town, you can take Highway 1095 to Pai, or if coming from Pai, take the same highway heading to Mae Hong Son town. The intersection to Ban Mok Champae is before reaching Mueang District. It is the same route to "Pang Ung", a popular tourist attraction for those who love romance. From the entrance, follow the signs to Ban Rak Thai. Passing through Ban Mae Soi intersection and passing Pha Suea waterfall, go up another 5 kilometers and you will reach the entrance of Pang Tong Palace.
The officer said that there is no entrance fee or permission to visit, but there will be soldiers guarding the center at all times because Her Majesty the Queen will regularly come to work here. Therefore, soldiers from the 21st Infantry Regiment, the Queen's Bodyguard, or the Queen's Tigers, will rotate to perform their duties.
The first place when entering the palace area, you should not miss paying homage to the "Tiger Soldiers' Shrine" and "Maharaj Shrine" for good luck. This shrine was built to honor King Naresuan the Great who, more than 400 years ago, according to records, led an army to conquer the city of "Hongsawadi" before continuing to conquer the city of Toungoo. However, the army was not ready and was short of food supplies, so they had to withdraw their army and march back via "Pang Tong", Mae Hong Son, Pai, Mae Malai, Chiang Mai, and back to Ayutthaya. Therefore, it was established as a memorial to commemorate him here.
