Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore - also known as the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four major Catholic churches, conveniently located
The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, also known as the Basilica of Our Lady, began construction in 431. It is one of the four major Catholic basilicas and the first church in the world named after the Virgin Mary. Due to its location in the center of Rome and close to Rome train station, it is a very popular church among tourists.
The exterior of the church is in the Baroque style commonly seen in Rome, and looks relatively simple. But when you step into the main hall, you will be amazed by its huge scale, including the long corridor (86 meters), marble columns on both sides and the magnificent ceiling.
There are also many Catholic relics, artworks, sculptures and statues in the basilica, which is like a museum. A must-see is the statue of Pope Pius IX in the basement below the main altar, kneeling devoutly in front of the infant basket, setting an example for the believers who come to visit.
