🙏Wat Klang Wiang is a temple and historical site in Chiang Rai Province. It was originally called Wat Chan Lok, Wat Chan Lok, or Chan Ta Lok. Wat Chan Lok Klang Wiang was the center of Wiang Chiang Rai in the past. It is where the original navel of Chiang Rai is enshrined.
📚Chiang Rai natives, Wat Pa Lan version, San Pa Tong District, Chiang Mai Province, said that Wat Klang Wiang was built in 2180 by Phaya Khitok or Phaya Khithon, the ruler of Chiang Rai, who was appointed by King Talun during the Burmese rule of Lanna.
🍀The reason it is called Wat Chan Lok is because there used to be a large red sandalwood tree in the temple. During the war with Burma, it became a deserted temple until 2368 when Phraya Rattana Anan (Chao Nan Thammalangka), the ruler of Chiang Rai, restored and restored Chiang Rai. The Tai Khun people of Mueang Phayak established a community around Wat Chan Lok, called Ban Phayak, and restored the temple again.
🏰 Later, during the reign of Phraya Rattana Anan (Chao Aun Ruean) defined the city area, built the city wall along the original line, the long city wall from east to west, the wide side from north to south, measured the diagonal lines, got the center position at Wat Chanthalok, so buried the navel of the city in 2417, so it was called Wat Chanthalok Klang Wiang. 📚 Chiang Rai City Chronicles, Chiang Rai City Restoration Era states that in 2438, the temple of Wat Chanthalok was completed, there was a celebration of the temple, but in 2446, there was a storm that blew down the large red sandalwood tree in the temple. The villagers brought some red sandalwood to put under the base of the principal Buddha image of the temple. When the red sandalwood tree fell, it caused the temple's name to be shortened to Wat Klang Wiang.
Important religious objects and permanent objects of the temple include: 🏰 The temple, newly built in 2534, is a modified Lanna architecture. The stairs leading up are made in the shape of Makara spitting a naga. There are statues of the lion king and a pair of Tung Kradang, the principal Buddha image made of stucco in the Mara-Vijaya posture, originally in the Tai Khun art style. Later, it was renovated by building over the original one in the Lanna art style, covered with gold leaf all over the body, called "Phra Chao Phet Mongkhon Muni". 🛕The pagoda was originally the Pancha Mahathat pagoda. In 1996, an elephant-supported pagoda was built, decorated with niches with many Buddha images. The base of the pagoda has elephants surrounding it. The base supports an octagonal bell-shaped body, high base, small bell-shaped body. 🛕The navel pillar of the city was built during the reign of Phraya Rattana Anekdin (Chao Un Ruean).
