It is the only temple in Ayutthaya that was not destroyed by the Burmese and still has Ayutthaya architecture in the most complete condition in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. The ordination hall is 50 meters long and 16 meters wide, in the early Ayutthaya style with pillars inside. It is located on the bank of Khlong Srabue on the northern side of the moat (formerly the Lopburi River), opposite the Royal Palace. It was built in the early Ayutthaya period in 2046 B.E. and its original name was "Wat Phra Meru Ratchikararam". The location of this temple was probably originally a place to build a royal crematorium for the royal cremation of one of the kings of the early Ayutthaya period. Later, a temple was built. There is a legend that Prince Indra in the reign of King Ramathibodi II built this temple in 2046 B.E. This temple is historically important. When King Maha Chakkraphat fought with King Bayinnaung, a peace treaty was signed in 2106. He built a pavilion between Wat Na Phra Meru and Wat Hatsadawat. Later, it was expanded by adding pillars to support the external eaves during the reign of King Borommakot. The pediment is carved in teak wood in the shape of Narayana riding a garuda stepping on a naga head and there are two Rahu statues next to the naga heads. The windows are pierced with long vertical slits. There are two rows of square pillars, each with eight pillars. The capitals of the pillars are in the Ayutthaya style. The top is decorated with stars. The ceiling is carved in wood lacquered and gilded. Phra Khanthararat is a green stone Buddha image in the attitude of giving the first sermon from the Dvaravati period. The Buddha image sits with his feet dangling on a lotus flower. It is believed that it was built between 1000-1200 B.E., which Phraya Chaiyawichit (Phuek), the head of the restoration and renovation during the reign of King Rama III, inscribed that it was brought from Wat Mahathat in Ayutthaya. However, there is a record during the reign of King Rama V that it was brought from Wat Phra Meru in Nakhon Pathom Province, which is the site where many large Dvaravati Buddha images were discovered. This Buddha image is a green stone Buddha image sitting with his feet dangling, which is the largest and most complete at present. There are only a few in Thailand. It is as old as the Borobudur or Borommaputto era on the island of Java in Indonesia, more than 1,000 years ago.
