Wat Nong Bua, Tha Wang Pha District, Nan Province – beautiful and simple
If anyone has ever traveled to Nan and fallen in love with the charm of this slow-paced but intriguing city, a small district like Tha Wang Pha has a peaceful corner worth visiting. Wat Nong Bua is one of them.
Wat Nong Bua may not be as famous as the temples in Nan city, but anyone who has visited will always say, “I’m glad I got to see it with my own eyes.” The most outstanding thing here is the mural paintings by local craftsmen that are still almost intact. They tell stories from the life of the Buddha, interspersed with the lifestyle of the Tai Lue people in the past, in a simple but lively way.
Every line, color, and gesture in the painting is like they are silently telling us stories of people a hundred years ago. There’s no need for much explanation. Just standing and looking, we understand that local art doesn’t have to be grand, but rather gentle and sincere.
Wat Nong Bua is still as peaceful as ever. The villagers still live simple lives and smile at strangers naturally. It’s an atmosphere that you can’t find in a big city, and sometimes, we just need small things like this to fill our hearts.

Well maintained historic Wat
#songkran2024 Nong Bua Temple is an old temple of Nong Bua Village. Well managed and maintained by local residents, Tai Lü (an ethnic group). The Wat itself has very old murals on the interior. There are other historic items as well, including coins, writings, etc.
The antique wall painting is so stunning and the architecture itself is simple but elegant. A group of elderly perform their own folk songs in front of the temple. So impressive. Highly recommend!

Wat Nong Bua, Nan Province
Wat Nong Bua was established in 2215 B.E. in Ban Nong Bua, a large Tai Lue village that has been inhabited for a long time. There is a story that the Tai Lue people from Mueang La, Sipsongpanna, migrated to Nan around Chula Sakarat 1184 (B.E. 2365).
The chapel is a simple rectangular shape. The highlight is the mural paintings in the same style as Wat Phumin. The chapel of Wat Nong Bua was built around B.E. 2405 by the leadership of Khru Ba Luang Sunanta and the villagers of Nong Bua. It is a Tai Lue architectural style. Inside the chapel, there are murals depicting stories of the Buddha's Jataka by Tai Lue craftsmen, of which only two remain today: Wat Phumin and Wat Nong Bua. The murals in the chapel of Wat Nong Bua were painted by Tid Buaphan, a Lao Phuan craftsman whom Mr. Thep brought from Mueang Phuan in Luang Prabang. The story painted in the paintings is the Chanthaka Jataka, which is the 11th oldest moral story in the book Pannya Sa Jataka, the last part. In addition, the painting also depicts a steamboat and French soldiers. According to the history of steamboats, they originated in Europe and America. It is assumed that the painter painted the painting during the reigns of King Rama IV to King Rama V. In addition, some parts of the painting depict the lifestyle of the Tai Lue people. #Mongpapai
