Wat Phra That Doi Kham | Chiang Mai
Wat Phra That Doi Kham is an important temple in Chiang Mai Province, over 1,300 years old. It is located on Doi Kham, behind Royal Park Rajapruek, about 10 kilometers from the city center. Wat Phra That Doi Kham is about 140 meters above the plains of Chiang Mai and 465 meters above mean sea level. Wat Phra That Doi Kham has a viewpoint where you can see the view of the whole city of Chiang Mai. It is also home to the Phra Chao Tan Jai, which is over 500 years old. Wat Phra That Doi Kham was built during the reign of Queen Chamadevi of Hariphunchai, built by her two sons in 1230. It consists of a chedi containing the relics of the Lord Buddha, a sala, monks’ huts, and a stucco Buddha image. It was originally called Wat Suwannabanphot, but the locals called it “Wat Doi Kham.” In 1966, Wat Doi Kham was a deserted temple. Later, the crypt was broken into and villagers found many antiques, such as Phra Rod Luang, a large gilded sandstone Buddha, and Phra Sam Mo (made of clay), which were enshrined at Wat Phra That Doi Kham.
There are 3 ways to get to Wat Phra That Doi Kham: - Take the road along the irrigation canal, branching off from the road at the foot of the mountain near Ton Phayom Market, and go south for about 6 kilometers. Wat Phra That Doi Kham will be on the right. - Follow the Chiang Mai - Hot road for about 9 kilometers from the airport intersection, and there is a right turn to Plant Propagation Center 7 for another 4 kilometers. From this route, the temple is in the area of the Plant Propagation Center. - From this point, travel along the Sameang intersection, Chiang Mai - Hang Dong road, along the irrigation canal. There will be a sign to cross the canal to Mae Hia sub-district. It is the same way as the Royal Park Rajapruek or Chiang Mai Night Safari and the Agricultural Research Center.
