Invite to worship Phra Mongkhon Bophit, the city pillar of Ayutthaya.
Phra Mongkhon Bophit Temple is located on the south side of Wat Phra Si Sanphet, on the same route as Khun Phaen’s house. Phra Mongkhon Bophit Temple is not far away. Phra Mongkhon Bophit is a bronze Buddha statue in the Mara-Vijaya attitude, measuring 9.55 meters wide and 12.45 meters high. It is one of the largest Buddha statues in Thailand. There is no clear evidence of when it was built, but it is assumed to have been built in the early Ayutthaya period between 1991 and 2145. King Songtham ordered the statue to be moved from the east outside the palace to the west, where it is currently enshrined, and ordered a pavilion to be built over it. During the reign of King Sua in 2249, a lightning bolt hit the top of the Phra Mongkhon Bophit pavilion, causing a fire, damaging the upper part of the Phra Mongkhon Bophit, so he ordered its repair. The roof of the pavilion was transformed into a grand temple and the head of Phra Mongkhon Bophit was added during the reign of King Borommakot (2285–2286). During the fall of Ayutthaya for the second time in 2310, the Phra Mongkhon Bophit temple was burned by the enemy and the upper part fell on the head and the right hand of Phra Mongkhon Bophit was broken. King Rama V ordered the renovation in 2474 during the reign of Phraya Boran Ratchathanin, the governor of Ayutthaya Province. Khunying Amonrat Sombat and her group submitted a request to repair the temple, but the government did not allow it because they wanted to maintain the archaeological model. They wanted to design an outdoor shrine like the Daibutsu of Japan. However, at that time, the government did not have a budget ready to proceed. Later, in 2499, the government of Field Marshal P. Phibunsongkhram began the renovation of the temple and the Buddha image as seen today. During the restoration of Phra Mongkhon Bophit in 1957, the Fine Arts Department found a large number of Buddha images buried in the right chest. They are currently kept at the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum and the Chandrakasem National Museum.
Coordinates: Phra Mongkhon Bophit Temple is located in Pratu Chai Subdistrict, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province.
