Following in the footsteps of the poet Xu Zhimo, I arrived in Haining. After visiting the No. 3 Silk Factory, Xu Zhimo's Tomb, and the Crescent Moon Theater, I finally arrived at Xu Zhimo's former residence on Ganhe Street. Anya Hall, built in 1926, is a small Western-style building. It was his love nest with Lu Xiaoman and is now a provincial-level cultural relic protection site in Zhejiang. The former residence preserves the poet's manuscripts, letters, portraits, personal belongings, and Lu Xiaoman's paintings. He associated with many prominent figures, and the plaques in the residence were inscribed by Jin Yong, Qi Gong, Kang Youwei, and Zang Kejia. The ancient well in the garden is also known as the "Fountain of Love." Xu Zhimo's study is called "Mei Xuan," because Lu Xiaoman's original name was "Lu Mei." He was willing to put in the effort for this passionate love. To cover the enormous expenses, he even worked five jobs at one time. Before the plane crash, he carried Lu Xiaoman's landscape painting and sought inscriptions from many famous artists. Interestingly, Xu's father later recognized Zhang Youyi as his adopted daughter, so a bedroom was specially set up for her in the former residence, next to Xu's mother's room. The residence also had hot and cold water pipes, electric lights, bathrooms, and other facilities, making it quite a luxurious house. Xu Zhimo came from a prominent family in Haining. The Xiashipu Xu family regarded Songting Gong as their ancestor, and the brick carvings on the former residence bear the four characters "Donghai Anya," the name of their ancestral home. His grandfather, Xu Xingpao, was a businessman for generations and founded the Xu Yufeng Sauce Garden. His uncle, Xu Rongchu, was a great book collector, and his study was named "Zilai Pavilion." His father, Xu Shenru, was the richest man in Haining and a far-sighted industrialist. He founded the Yutong Bank, Shuangshan Silk Factory, and the Electric Light and Telephone Company. He also developed fire-fighting services, was enthusiastic about public welfare, and founded a vocational training center for the poor. In 1910, under the introduction of his uncle, Shen Junru, he studied at Hangzhou Prefecture Middle School, where he met Yu Dafu, and they often discussed literature together. In 1918, Xu Zhimo went to the United States to study with the dream of saving the country, aspiring to be China's Alexander Hamilton. In 1921, introduced by Dickinson, he entered Cambridge University and met Lin Huiyin. In 1924, he joined the New Culture Movement and founded the Crescent Moon Society with Hu Shi, Liang Qichao, and others. In 1932, after his death, he was buried in Dongshan, Haining. The talented woman Ling Shuhua wrote the epitaph "Cold Moon Shines on the Poet's Soul." In 1983, Xu Zhimo's tomb was moved to the banks of Baishui Spring in Xishan, next to the tomb of his son, Xu Desheng. In 1915, Zhang Youyi married Xu Zhimo. After their divorce in 1921, Zhang Youyi quickly recovered, gave birth to Xu Desheng, and taught German at Soochow University. In 1928, she became the vice president of the Shanghai Women's Commercial Bank and concurrently the general manager of "Yunshang Clothing Company," Shanghai's first women's fashion company. In 1926, Lu Xiaoman married Xu Zhimo. Lu Xiaoman was proficient in English and French and was also skilled at playing the piano, acting, and painting. She studied under Liu Haisu and collaborated with Xu Zhimo on the five-act play "Bian Kungang," which became famous in Beijing and Shanghai. Between 1920 and 1928, Xu Zhimo traveled to Europe three times, socializing with famous figures such as Russell, Dickinson, and Hardy. He was a courageous ambassador and bridge for cultural exchange between East and West, hoping for nothing more than "green grass, distant people, a stream of cold water." The poet is gone, but his poetic spirit lives on. He pursued love and freedom throughout his life, singing passionately about the ideals of love and beauty in the world, living for love and dying for love.

In the 2nd century AD, Lu Xun was appointed as the military officer of Haichang (now Haining) and led the county affairs, encouraging and supervising agriculture and sericulture. During the Southern Song Dynasty, the capital was moved to Lin'an, which promoted the development of the sericulture and silk industry in Haining. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the sericulture industry in Haining developed even faster, with the saying "sericulture is ten times more profitable than farming" and "silkworms mature in half a year." Yunlong Village in Zhouwangmiao Town, as a typical representative of sericulture production in Haining, not only retains a large number of traditional sericulture production techniques but also has formed a series of folk activities related to silkworms. Haining's "rocking fast boat," also known as "stepping on the white boat," is a folk water sports activity held to worship the silkworm god. Haining is known as the "land of fish and rice, silk capital, and cultural center." It was first established as Yanguan County in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, and was renamed Haining Prefecture in 1329, meaning "eternal peace of the river and sea," and was under the jurisdiction of Hangzhou Prefecture. Haining Xucun flour sculpture originated in the Qing Dynasty, also known as "rice sculpture," is a folk art made of cooked rice flour dough and hand-molded. It is still widely used in Haining folk customs such as beam raising, festivals, weddings, funerals, and birthdays. Haining bamboo weaving is best represented by the traditional bamboo weaving craftsmanship of Maojiadou in Yanguan Town. The stone carvings unearthed from the Han tombs in Chang'an Town show that Haining stone carving skills were already very mature in the Han Dynasty, reached their peak in the Tang Dynasty, and became more realistic in style during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Haining's specialties include Baiguo sesame cakes, Chang'an banquet balls (fish balls), Xieqiao pickles, and Wang vegetables (baby bok choy). Zhu Wanchang Baiguo sesame cakes originated from a pastry and snack shop founded by Ma Wanxing in Yanguan, Haining in the 10th year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1871), and there is a saying that "in the north (Xiaoshi) there is Tian Yixing, and in the south (Yanguan) there is Zhu Wanchang." Haining's three knives, namely medicine knives, cake knives, and slicing knives (kitchen knives), were created by the century-old shop Zhou Shunxing Iron Shop in the 14th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1888), and have a history of more than 100 years. Haining has a custom of making Xishi "moon cakes" during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Xishi moon cakes are commonly known as "collapsed cakes." It is said that Fan Li personally selected the best green beans, kudzu root, and lotus root every day, crushed them into filling, and made them into cakes. To thank the people of Youquan, Xishi taught them the silkworm breeding techniques of Mangluo Village in Zhuji. The local people called her "Silkworm Flower Goddess" and made a few moon cakes every Mid-Autumn Festival to express their longing. Colorful calico is a handicraft developed on the basis of blue calico. Colorful calico is bright and vivid in color, simple and elegant in pattern, and full of rustic charm. Zuqun, also known as apron or tuanyishang, is blue in color, can keep the legs warm, and is convenient for labor, and is a traditional men's clothing in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Blue and white calico headscarves are an important symbol of women's clothing in the eastern part of Haining.

Haining was formerly known as Haichang, and is a world-famous place to watch the Qiantang River tide. It is a city that has been seriously overlooked. "Haining" means "peaceful sea," expressing the people's wish for "peace and prosperity for all." The Qiantang River embankment was called the "Sea Defense Embankment" before the Southern and Northern Dynasties, the "Sea Defense Embankment" after the Southern and Northern Dynasties, the "Haiyan Embankment" in the Song Dynasty, the "Taiping Embankment" in the Yuan Dynasty, the "Barrier Embankment" and "Sea Defense Embankment" in the Ming Dynasty, and the "Sea Embankment" in the Qing Dynasty. Emperor Qianlong visited Jiangnan six times, four of which he visited Haining to inspect the sea embankment project. Every time he visited Haining, he stayed at the home of Chen Yunlong, the Yuyuan of Chen Ge, which was later named "Anlan Garden," meaning "may the waves be calm." The Yan'guan Sea Defense Embankment was rebuilt in the Tang Dynasty, with soil as the embankment. In the Yuan Dynasty, stone piles and wooden cabinets were used to build the embankment, which was called the "Stone Embankment." In the Ming Dynasty, wooden cabinets and bamboo were used to build the embankment. In the Kangxi period, the fish scale stone embankment was built. The Haining Fish Scale Sea Embankment is a barrier against tides and protects the Taihu Plain from floods and tides. It is known as one of the three great ancient Chinese construction projects, along with the Great Wall and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. The Haining Sea Defense Embankment in the Tang and Song Dynasties was a soil embankment, located 3 miles south of the county seat. In 1720, Zhejiang Governor Zhu Shi improved the technology based on the Ming Dynasty's Huang Guangsheng Fish Scale Stone Embankment and built a 500-zhang Fish Scale Stone Embankment near the old salt warehouse, which was the first time in Haining's history that a Fish Scale Stone Embankment was built. The "Piling Song" is a folk music created by the embankment workers based on the rhythm of their labor. The lyrics are simple and lively, the melody is high-pitched and exciting, the rhythm is steady and powerful, and the melody is varied. The Qiantang River tide watching began in the Han and Wei Dynasties, flourished in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and has a history of more than 2,000 years. It is said that the 18th day of the eighth lunar month is the birthday of the tide god, and today it is the Tide Watching Festival. After the construction of the Sea God Temple in the ninth year of the Yongzheng period (1731), all the sea gods in the temples were worshipped here. Every year from the 18th day of the eighth lunar month, plays are performed here to celebrate. On the 18th day, the sea defense officer and his subordinates wear court clothes to offer sacrifices, and the tide is worshipped by provincial and local officials at the Daguan Pavilion next to the Zhan'ao Tower. Haining salt production originated from Liu Bang's nephew, King Wu of Liu Bi, who boiled seawater to make salt, and has a history of more than 2,100 years. The Qiantang River fishing techniques include catching tide fish, netting eel fry, netting shrimp, trawling, and netting fish. Catching tide fish means catching fish with the tide, using a net to catch fish when they jump out of the water. The formation of Chang'an is closely related to the creation of waterways. The name of Chang'an Town is also related to the three locks and two dams of Chang'an. The Chang'an Lock is an important water conservancy hub connecting the Grand Canal and the Shangtang River system. The Chang'an Lock was the first to create a double lock, with multiple functions such as tide control, water storage, and water circulation, which is evidence of China's ancient water conservancy technology leading the world. Chang'an Town set up a post station as early as the fifth year of the Tang Dynasty (631), called "Sangting Post," and later changed to "Yiting Post." In the Northern Song Dynasty, it was changed from a market to a town, and the name has not changed for more than a thousand years. The Hongqiao Bridge over the Shangtang River was famous in the Song Dynasty. There are also legends about the Qili Pavilion, He Wenxiu, Chen Ge, and the Ziwei Legend. The Haining Waterwheel Song, also known as the "Hatou Song," is a high-pitched and bright song. The Hatou Song can unify the rhythm, adjust the labor intensity, and calculate the number of waterwheel rotations and the amount of labor. In the past, farmland was irrigated by human-powered waterwheels, and farmers used the "Hatou" counting method and voluntary labor exchange to rotate the waterwheels. When the marks on the wheel and axle met, it was called "one ha," and when they met, they sang, with one person asking and the others responding. The Waterwheel Song initially only had a call-and-response form, but in the 1930s, the call-and-response formed a dragging tune, called "Hatou Xian." In the late 1940s, a more complete "Hatou Song" was formed. The Haining Saizi Book, also known as the "Saizi Song" or "Praise God Song," originated from the ancient folk sacrificial storytelling art and evolved into a storytelling style in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Haining Saizi Book does not use makeup or props, and only one person performs. It is mostly performed at weddings, birthdays, childbirth celebrations, and recovery ceremonies.

Ziwei Mountain, also known as Xishan, stands alongside Dongshan (Shenshan). The mountain's peak is 47.5 meters above sea level and was praised as the "First Peak of Haichang" by the early Ming Dynasty poet Bei Qiong. Legend has it that the two mountains were once one, known as Xiashi Mountain, before being split by Qin Shi Huang. The mountain is home to Ziwei Pavilion, where Bai Juyi, a scholar of the Tang Dynasty, once climbed to view Xiashi Lake. The Zhongshu Sheng (Central Secretariat) was later renamed Ziwei Sheng. On the north slope, beside Baishui Spring, are the tombs of Xu Zhimo and Qian Jundian. On the west slope is the Qian Juntao Art Museum, and on the south slope are the Former Residence of Zhang Zongxiang and the Xu Bangda Art Museum, making the mountain the cultural center and highland of Haining City. Huili Temple on the south slope was built by Zhang Yanguang, a minister of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, on his own property. The Huili Temple Stone Pillar was first built in the 15th year of the Xiantong period of the Tang Dynasty (874) and is a national key cultural relic protection unit. Huili Temple, Ziwei Bridge, and the Japanese Invasion Watchtower are cultural relic protection units of Haining City, while Guangfu Temple and Xu Zhimo's Tomb are cultural relic protection sites of Haining City. Xishan Park to the north is the oldest public garden in Haining. Of the "Twelve Scenic Spots of Xiachuan," Ziwei Spring Dawn, Xisi Smoke Bell, Crane Pavilion Fairy Cave, Shangfang Morning Breeze, and Fang'an Evening Meditation are all located on Xishan.

Nanguanxiang Historical and Cultural Block is named after the guanxiang (a type of gate) built by Zhou Zongyi, a Ming dynasty loyalist who resisted the Qing dynasty. In history, there was a yanglongfang (a type of fire-fighting facility) in Nanguanxiang Street. Zhou Zongyi set up 10 guanxiang and 42 water fences on the main roads of water and land in Xieshi Town, which were opened early and closed late to prevent thieves. Nanguanxiang is the only remaining relic. When the Qing army entered the pass, Zhou Zongyi spent all his family property to recruit thousands of volunteers. Later, he died in the battle to defend his hometown, and his wife also drowned herself. Today, there is a Zhou Zongyi Memorial Hall in Nanguanxiang Street, and his spirit still exists. The iron ruyi from the Song dynasty in the museum was used by Zhou Zongyi to fight against the Qing army. It was a gift from Zhao Qingxian in the Song dynasty, and later obtained by Zhang Zongxiang, who named his study "Iron Ruyi Hall" in memory of it. The municipal-level cultural relics protection units in Nanguanxiang Street include Nanguanxiang, Wu Shichang's Former Residence, Guandi Temple Hall, and Dayao Bridge. The Huanshui Bridge opposite Guandi Temple, also known as Xihuan Bridge, was built in the fourth year of the Jianwen period of the Ming dynasty (1402). It is commonly known as "Tang Bridge" and is a three-ring arch bridge. Nanguanxiang Street relies on the convenience of the Grand Canal to sell grain from the four townships of the county, commonly known as "Xianghuo Xing Rice Shop". The buildings in Nanguanxiang Street are built along the Luotang River, with shops in the front and workshops in the back, mostly from the Qing dynasty to the Republic of China. The houses on the inner side of the street are mostly multi-entry courtyards, with the deepest courtyards having as many as six entries. Generally, the first entry is a simple shop, and the latter entries are more elaborate, reflecting the social culture of "wealth is not shown outside". Famous people such as historian Wu Qichang, Redologist Wu Shichang, and film art educator Shen Songsheng came from here. On the other side of the river is the Third China Silk Factory founded by Xu Zhimo's father, which is now the Kangqiao 1924 Cultural and Creative Park. The street is open until late at night, with museums, memorial halls, and art galleries (Zhang Jialing) gathered together. No reservation is required and admission is free, making it very suitable for reverse travel during holidays.
