Urumqi Tianshan Grand Canyon

7.1
4.3/5
1.6k reviews
Urumqi Tianshan Grand Canyon is located in the northern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains' Tianger Peak, south of Urumqi city, with an average elevation of about 2 km. It is a large mountainous attraction integrating snow-capped mountains, glaciers, forests, grasslands, lakes, and canyons. Nestled deep in the arid inland mountains, the canyon features significant relative elevation differences, showcasing a clear and complete vertical natural zonation from shrub grasslands at the mountain base to ice and snow belts near the snowline. It is often described as "a condensed representation of Xinjiang's natural views, excluding deserts." The attraction consists of several areas: Tianshan Dam leisure zone, Zhaobi Mountain resort and recreation area, Jias Daban sightseeing zone, Swan Lake natural scenic area, Niu Mao Lake forest and pine waves sightseeing zone, Kazakh ethnic culture park, alpine grassland ecological zone, and snow mountain glacier sightseeing area. Two lakes, three waterfalls, four streams, and eighteen valleys connect the main views. At the entrance, Zhaobi Mountain is surrounded by water on three sides, with its pyramid-like steep slopes reflecting in the water on sunny days—a signature scene of the attraction. The high-altitude Swan Lake, known as "lover's tears" for its crystal-clear water, often hosts swans lingering by its shores during summer and fall. East of the lake, Qoya Grassland is dotted with yurts and herds of livestock, where visitors can ride horses into the mountains to experience the nomadic life of Kazakh herders. From the open vantage point of Tianmen viewpoint, both Swan Lake and Qoya Grassland unfold in panoramic views. The valley also preserves vast stretches of pristine Tianshan spruce forests on the northern slopes, with towering emerald-green spruces forming a continuous "sea" along the terrain—a highly distinctive feature of this area. A common round-trip route starts from Zhaobi mountain, goes inward along Tianshan dam, passes Swan lake and reaches Qiaoya grassland. Allowing half a day to a full day makes for a more leisurely visit, and travelers can complete the round-trip from the city in a single day. The mountainous area has high altitude and changeable weather - even in midsummer, the average temperature is only around 20°C, with cooler mornings and evenings, so it's advisable to bring a jacket. The deep valleys along Jingou valley and Wudao'ao area, accompanied by streams, are perfect for travelers who enjoy hiking and photography to slow down and appreciate the scenery.Urumqi County · 11.2 km from downtown

Nanshan Scenic Area generally refers to the vast mountainous area located in the south of Urumqi, at the northern foot of the Karawucheng Mountain in the northern Tianshan Mountains. It was a hunting area in the Tang Dynasty and a famous pasture in the Qing Dynasty. The snow-capped peaks in the scenic area are towering, the trees are lush, the flowers and plants are everywhere, and there is a strong ethnic minority style. Nanshan Scenic Area is mainly composed of east and west Baiyang Valley, Houxia, Chrysanthemum Terrace, Miaoer Valley and Banfang Valley. In spring and summer, the chrysanthemums on the hillsides are golden, the buttercups and comfreys are in full bloom, the fragrance is overflowing, the bees and butterflies are flying, and the slopes are full of cattle and sheep. Walking on the grassland, you can watch Kazakh performances such as horse racing, sheep chasing, and girl chasing, which is a typical Tianshan grassland scenery. On the Zhongliang Platform on the east side of the Chrysanthemum Platform, there is the Urumqi Observatory, which is in line with the international observation level, and contains the largest radio telescope in my country with a diameter of 25 meters. Alfalfa Terrace in Tuoli Township is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and embraces the meadows. From spring to autumn, more than ten kinds of wildflowers are blooming one after another in the scenic area, with different colors, colorful and beautiful. There are also bubbling springs and wild animals appearing everywhere, showing an attractive primitive style everywhere. Xibaiyanggou is a well-known tourist resort in the Nanshan Scenic Area. In the scenic area, the pine forests are continuous with peaks, the peaks are abrupt, the creeks run through the strange rocks, the villas are hidden in the green forests, and the yurts are scattered. On the open lawn, the wildness is compelling. A clear and sweet mountain stream in East Baiyanggou sings and sings softly, upstream, the breeze blows, and the pine waves surge in the endless forest sea, which is spectacular. When it rains, the mist and rain are misty, like a dream; after the rain, the clouds are steaming and the clouds are splendid, like a poem and picturesque. There is a chrysanthemum terrace in Gangou Township, with a meandering stream at the bottom of the ditch, dense pines in the north and lush green grass in the south. On the flat and wide table, wild chrysanthemums are golden yellow, Zhaosu purple red, and fragrant colors. The cattle and sheep on the slope are decorated with bees and butterflies. Especially, the sunlight casts the shadow of white clouds on the green grass, flowing like water. The movement adds to the scenic spot - the scenery of saying goodbye.Urumqi County · 20.8 km from downtown

Miao'ergou Sceneic Area is located in Miao'ergou Village, Shuixigou Town, Urumqi County, at the junction of the northern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains and the alluvial inclined plain, approx. 40 km from Urumqi City. The scenic area covers a total area of approx. 5 km², with an average altitude of 1860 m, and belongs to the mid-temperate continental arid climate. Its name originates from the late Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, when local villagers built a Dragon King Temple at the gully entrance to protect against floods, hence the name. The attraction boasts diverse tourism resources, covering sites such as the Muyunju dining club, aerial grassland, Hulu Valley camping site, rivers, Deer Turning Head, Thousand-year Tree, Birch Park, Longma Post Station, Koktus, Qingshui Pond, Blind Bear Den, Pearl Spring, and Dragon King waterfall. It stands out among the Nanshan series of attractions for its abundant tourism resources, awaiting visitors to explore and discover. The most renowned among them is the Dragon King waterfall, which serves as the core view of the attraction, shining like a brilliant pearl with captivating charm. The waterfall's water originates from glacial meltwater on Bogda Peak. The converging meltwater forms streams that rush through mountain valleys and cascade down an approx. 50 m high cliff, creating a magnificent spectacle. During summer's abundant water flow, multiple small waterfalls descend alongside the Dragon King waterfall, forming a "silver chain" landscape. In winter, the waterfall freezes into spectacular ice formations and translucent walls. To allow visitors to experience the waterfall's unique charm across seasons, the attraction annually carves out an approx. 30 m long and 16 m wide ice corridor walkway before the waterfall from late April to early May. Walking through this ice corridor feels like navigating a frozen maze, surrounded by crystal-clear ice sculptures and smooth icy surfaces, offering refreshing coolness during hot summers and distinctive ice-viewing pleasure. In summer, as temperatures rise, glacial meltwater increases significantly, making the water volume extremely abundant. At this time, the Dragon King waterfall reaches its most beautiful moment. In addition to the main waterfall, multiple small waterfalls form, cascading down together with the Dragon King waterfall like crystal-clear "silver chains" falling from the sky to the earth. Under the sunlight, they shimmer with dazzling brilliance, creating an breathtaking view. The mist stirred up by the waterfall fills the valley, often forming gorgeous rainbows under the sunlight's refraction, adding a dreamy touch to the entire view. Visitors stop to admire the scene, capturing this awe-inspiring beauty with their cameras and marveling at nature's extraordinary craftsmanship. Besides the Dragon King Waterfall, Miao'ergou Sceneic Area boasts beautiful natural scenery all year round. In spring, the valley is adorned with blooming apricot flowers, while walnut and elm trees thrive on the mountains. Walking through the dense forest in the attraction, you can feel the refreshing pine-scented breeze. With some luck, you might even bend down to pick wild mushrooms, fully enjoying the delight of returning to nature. For cultural experiences, the yurt area created by Muyunju is full of nomadic characteristics, where travelers can immerse in the unique atmosphere, experience local folk culture, and savor specialty cuisine. Longma Post offers fun activities like horse riding. Ascending along the wooden boardwalk from Muyunju leads to the breathtaking aerial grassland. This open terrain offers expansive views, with soft green grass underfoot, rolling mountains in the distance, and a crystal-clear sky overhead where white clouds seem within reach. Standing on the grassland, the gentle breeze carries the fragrance of grass, refreshing the mind and spirit. You can run and play freely, embracing nature's vastness, or sit quietly on the grass, taking in the attraction's majestic scenery—mountains, forests, and rivers—while enjoying moments of tranquility. Hulu Valley camping site is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The serene environment, surrounded by dense forests and murmuring rivers, resembles a secluded utopia. As night falls and stars dot the sky, you can pitch a tent on the open grassland, enjoy a picnic while chatting, and fully embrace the joy of camping. Fall asleep to the sounds of insects and birds, and wake up at dawn bathed in the first rays of sunlight, breathing in the fresh air. The river in the attraction meanders like a lively ribbon winding through the valleys. Its crystal-clear water sparkles with rippling reflections under the sunlight. Towering pine trees in the dense forest interlock their branches, forming a natural green canopy. Walking through, the pine-scented breeze brings refreshing coolness while rustling sounds from thick layers of fallen leaves create a symphony of the forest. With some luck, you might even bend down to pick fresh wild mushrooms and enjoy the delight of foraging. In terms of facilities, Miao'ergou Sceneic Area has fully considered the needs of travelers and carefully built comprehensive facilities. The attraction has 7 star-rated flush toilets that are clean, tidy, and fully equipped, as well as a baby care room for families traveling with infants. There are also 5 parking lots available. Whether you are a traveler seeking a health retreat or an outdoor enthusiast passionate about self-drive camping, you can enjoy comfortable and convenient services here and have an unforgettable experience. Miao'ergou Sceneic Area, with its unique natural scenery, profound cultural heritage, and comprehensive facilities, has become a place for people to escape the hustle and bustle, get close to nature, and relax. Whether you are looking for a quiet summer retreat, eager for an exciting outdoor adventure, or hoping to experience rich folk customs, Miao'ergou Sceneic Area can meet your needs and provide you with an unforgettable travel experience.Urumqi County · 5.6 km from downtown

Chrysanthemums Terrace is located in Gangou Township on the southern outskirts of Urumqi. This area is a typical Tianshan grassland pasture, or in geological terms, a gently sloping alluvial fan terrace. The valley bottom is meandered by streams, with dense pine forests to the north and lush green grass to the south. It consists of three attractions: the vast highland chrysanthemum platform, the Haokai summer pasture, and the Wu'ahe self-service camping area. Here, you'll find expansive grasslands, summer blooms, golden chrysanthemums in fall, and snowy landscapes in winter, making it a uniquely characteristic high-altitude Tianshan grassland pasture. From June to July each year, the flat and wide terrace becomes covered with wild chrysanthemums, filling the air with fragrance, hence the name Chrysanthemums Terrace. The entire area sits at an altitude of 2000-2400 m, covering approx. 500 hectares. Deer are often spotted in the dense forests, and after rain, mushrooms emerge in abundance beneath the trees, ready for picking. When the wild chrysanthemums bloom, the landscape turns golden, with sunlight casting moving shadows of clouds over the grass like flowing water, adding a distinctive charm to the attraction. Strolling through this scenery naturally lifts one's spirits and sparks the imagination. Photography enthusiasts can find inspiration during dawn or dusk to capture beautiful shots. On the Zhongliang Terrace to the east of Chrysanthemums Terrace stands the Urumqi Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, home to China's largest radio telescope with a diameter of 25 m.Urumqi County · 21.9 km from downtown

It's a large place, with the attractions divided into several sections. When I went, there were very few food stalls, and it felt quite deserted. Many areas were fenced off, and I had no idea where to go. The signage was unclear, and I felt like I was wandering around on my own.

The driver of the new AW9 N 7* was excellent and very patient. He called ahead to pick everyone up from the hotel, the itinerary was well-planned, he was very responsible, and his driving skills were superb. The car was spacious and comfortable. The drive to the destination was also very pleasant. We passed a field of sunflowers and he even asked if we wanted to take photos. Scenery: At this time of year, the grass wasn't as green, more yellow, and there were lambs grazing on the hillsides. The unique scenery was beautiful. The sky was high and the clouds were white, with eagles circling overhead. Luckily, we even encountered some chubby marmots sunbathing along the way! Value for Money: Overall, I had a great time. There was no forced spending; it was all voluntary!

The night session was fantastic, absolutely amazing! The slopes were long, and the snow quality was great. I skied a few runs on the intermediate slope to get used to it, then went on two runs on the advanced slope. I finally got to see the Happy Valley I'd been looking forward to – it was so beautiful! ⚠️Note: Happy Valley is on the advanced slope. Before reaching Happy Valley, there are two big hills. Beginners are advised to gently push down the hills or walk down them, as it's easy to fall on those slopes.

The temperature has risen recently, so the snow isn't great, and it doesn't feel as dry, making it a completely different experience from skiing in Ketuhai. Also, the parking in the underground parking lot near the ticket hall is extremely chaotic and disorganized, making it very difficult to get in and out of the parking lot.

Located just a 1.5-hour drive from Urumqi, Xibaiyanggou boasts grasslands, waterfalls, pine forests, and streams. The highlight is Xibaiyanggou, where you can take a shuttle bus to the waterfall and enjoy a picnic and water play by the stream on the return trip. For horseback riding, choose the gentle slope at Wulastai (120 yuan per person) for a safe and exhilarating experience.
