Jamie Catto THE OLD FOREST PATH | Blackwell's Bookshop

Jun 7, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Arts
Theater
James Catto is a British musician, video director, photographer, and script editor. He was a founding member of Faithless, before leaving in 1999 to form 1 Giant Leap. Jamie will be performing songs and reading from his new book for children. The Old Forest Path In an enchanted forest live magical fairies who delight in music and dance, however they always follow the old path through the woods, having been told to do so will keep them safe. It happened one afternoon, when the sun was casting its hypnotic patterns through the branches above, that from somewhere out of sight, a new and unheard music reached the delicate ears of those magical creatures. It began as a flute but then turned into a pipe. It moved like a drum but then pulsed like a stamp. The music reached high and yet still rumbled down low and it moved them all as it filtered so invitingly from its origin unknown. One fairy is bold enough to leave the path in search of the source of this beautiful sound. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite

The Pantry UK | Brook Business Centre

Cowley
Cultural Experiences
Join us at The Pantry UK in Uxbridge as part of Family Business Fortnight Retail Day for an audience with Luke Consiglio. Their journey started by taking on a small sandwich shop on a busy high street which had been established since 1987. With big ambitions for the business Luke and the team started to change things straight away. Within the first 6 months they were catering for companies and events that they never thought they could attract in such a short space of time. Nearly 15 years later, they've continued to broaden the business and now supply some of the country's most recognisable companies with various services such as corporate buffets, staff lunches and even cater for their major event days where they have fed up to 20,000 people! With further expansion into schools, they currently provide over 15,000 daily meals for a wide variety of schools across the borough and beyond. Paul Andrews will be hosting the session and interview with Luke in their demonstration kitchen about the incredible entrepreneurial journey that he has been on and there will be an opportunity to ask questions and to network with fellow guests over a coffee and bite to eat. Numbers are limited and early booking is recommended. Information Source: Family Business United | eventbrite

Rowe Irvin and Gurnaik Johal in conversation with Kaye Mitchell | Blackwell's Bookshop

Oxford
Arts
Literary Arts
We are thrilled to partner with the University of Manchester's Centre for New Writing to welcome Rowe Irvin and Gurnaik Johal to the shop to discuss their stunning debut novels LIFE CYCLE OF A MOTH and SARASWATI. The authors will be in conversation with Kaye Mitchell. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About LIFE CYCLE OF A MOTH: Maya and Daughter live in complete isolation in a secluded woodland, their days aligned with the light and changing seasons, a complex pattern of routine and ritual. Daughter has never questioned the life her mother has chosen for them; the life that has meant she's never met another soul, or known anywhere except their forest home. But one day, when Daughter is almost sixteen, a red-haired stranger steps into the confines of their territory. Where there was always two, suddenly there are three - and the carefully constructed world that Maya has built to keep her daughter safe may not survive it. About SARASWATI: Centuries ago, the holy river Saraswati flowed through what is now Punjab. Many dismiss this as myth, but when Satnam arrives in his ancestral village for his grandmother's funeral, he finds water in the dried-up well behind her house. The discovery sets in motion a contentious scheme to unearth the lost river as an act of Hindu nationalist pride. The river changes the course of Satnam's life, and those of six others. As legends and histories resurface, the distant relatives - from a Canadian eco-saboteur to a Mauritian pest exterminator to a Bollywood stunt double - are brought together in a rapidly changing India. Ambitious, moving and brimming with folklore, Saraswati is a tour de force from one of Britain's most feted young writers. About the authors: Rowe Irvin’s writing has been published by Prototype, Dancing Bear Books, the Oxford Review of Books and the Bristol Poetry Institute. She recently released an artist’s book limited edition of narrative poems in collaboration with the painter Georg Wilson. She has been shortlisted for the Bridport Poetry Prize and the Bath Short Story Award, and longlisted for the Alpine Fellowship Writing Prize, the Fish Anthology Poetry Prize and the Bath Flash Fiction Award. Gurnaik Johal is a writer from West London born in 1998. His 2022 collection We Move won the Somerset Maugham Award and the Tata Literature Live! Prize. Its opening story won the Galley Beggar Short Story Prize. Saraswati is his debut novel. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of one of the books, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. THE OTHERS - An evening with Sheena Kalayil | Blackwell's Bookshop

Jun 19, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Arts
Join us for an evening with Sheena Kalayil to celebrate the launch of her novel THE OTHERS, where a love triangle plays out against the backdrop of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The event will consist of live music, a talk about her writing process and inspirations, and a reading from the book. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: It is 1989, and in a small Baltic city in East Germany, the Deutsche Demokratische Republik, three young people from vastly different backgrounds become friends. Armando is a factory worker from Mozambique, Lolita is a medical student from India, and Theo is an East Berliner who dreams of being a writer. When Armando and Lolita make a grisly discovery, they find themselves caught up in the politics of Theo’s homeland more than ever before. While a quiet revolution sweeps through Eastern Europe, and the Berlin Wall teeters, the three find themselves entangled in a poignant love triangle which threatens their futures. As the world order shifts, their three lives are bound together in a web of love, lies and fears, leaving each irrevocably changed. About the author: Sheena Kalayil is a critically acclaimed Manchester-based author and teacher. THE OTHERS is Kalayil's fourth novel, continuing her profound examination of untold stories from the crossroads of history and human experience. Her third book, 'The Wild Wind', drew inspiration from her own nomadic upbringing shuttling between India, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Kalayil's debut novel, 'The Bureau of Second Chances', announced her as a major new literary talent, winning the prestigious Writers' Guild Award for Best First Novel and being shortlisted for the Edward Stanford Prize for Fiction with a Sense of Place. With a lifetime of experiences teaching around the world, from Nepal and Mozambique to Tunisia and Venezuela, Kalayil brings a truly global perspective to her writing. Since 2002, she has called the UK home, now teaching at the University of Manchester while penning rich, immersive narratives that transcend borders. Tickets are £4.00. Gateways to Ecstasy ~ A 5Rhythms Workshop | South Oxford Community Centre

Jun 21–Jun 22, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Arts
Dance
WHAT IS THE WORKSHOP ABOUT? “Ecstasy is an egoless, timeless state of being. It’s a state of total alignment and unity. Unity of body, heart, mind, soul, and spirit. It is what we need to heal our psychic dismemberment. We can’t access it if we are divided, body against mind, mind against heart, or any other way. We can only reach ecstasy through wholeness. One way to experience being whole is through meditation. The purpose of meditation is to still the mind and surrender to the moment. The fastest way I’ve found to still the mind and be aware of the moment is to move the body.” ~Gabrielle Roth, Maps to Ecstasy. Gabrielle Roth wrote an entire book on ecstasy and how to get there through the map of the 5Rhythms. Contrary to popular belief, ecstasy is not just confined to the rhythm of Lyrical or Chaos, but can be found in all of the rhythms individually, and when danced as a Wave. In this 2-day workshop, we will dive into the transformative power of the 5Rhythms practice and explore different gateways to ecstasy through dance, through each of our senses, through presence, and through connection with the self and with others. PREREQUISITES No experience or prerequisites required. Just your curiosity, commitment to be present, and an open heart. WHEN AND WHERE Saturday 21st June, 12:30pm to 6:30pm. Sunday 22nd June 2025, 12pm to 6pm Oxford, UK. COST £125 (£110 concession) Early bird until 21st May: £110 (£95 concession) Super Early bird until 21st April: £95 (£80 concession) Information Source: 5Rhythms with Irem Luqman | eventbrite

Arts
Literary Arts
The Genius Myth The tortured poet. The rebellious scientist. The monstrous artist. The tech disruptor. You can tell what a society values by who it labels as a genius. You can also tell who it excludes, who it enables, and what it is prepared to tolerate. Taking us from the Renaissance Florence of Leonardo da Vinci to the Floridian rocket launches of Elon Musk's SpaceX, Helen Lewis unravels a word that we all use - without really questioning what it means. Along the way, she uncovers the secret of the Beatles' success, asks how biographers should solve the Austen Problem, and reveals why Stephen Hawking thought IQ tests were for losers (before taking one herself). And she asks if the modern idea of genius - a class of special people - is distorting our view of the world. Helen Lewis Helen Lewis is a British journalist who works as a Staff Writer at the Atlantic Magazine. She is a regular on the Private Eye podcast, Page 94, and is the co-host of Strong Message Here with Armando Iannucci on BBC Radio 4. Her history of Feminism, 'Difficult Women' was a Sunday Times bestseller. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite

About the book: It's been raining for a long time now, for so long that the lands have reshaped themselves. Old places have been lost. Arcane rituals and religions have crept back into practice. Sisters Isla, Irene and Agnes have not spoken in some time when their estranged father dies. A famous architect revered for making the new world navigable, he had long cut himself off from public life. They find themselves uncertain of how to grieve his passing when everything around them seems to be ending anyway. As the sisters come together to clear the grand glass house that is the pinnacle of his legacy, they begin to sense that the magnetic influence of their father lives on through it. Something sinister seems to be unfolding, something related to their mother's long-ago disappearance and the strangers who have always been unusually interested in their lives. Soon, it becomes clear that the sisters have been chosen for a very particular purpose, one with shattering implications for their family and their imperilled world. About the author: Julia Armfield is a fiction writer, living in London with her wife and cat. Her work has been published in Granta, The White Review and Best British Short Stories 2019 and 2021. Jenn will be in conversation with Helen Mort Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: Burnt out and longing for an escape, Jenn Ashworth emerged from lockdown with a compulsive need to walk - and to walk away. Armed with little more than the knowledge imparted by a two-day orienteering course and a set of maps, she embarked on the most epic of English walks: Wainwright's Coast to Coast. Guided not just by Wainwright's writing but also by daily letters from her friend Clive - facing an epic journey of his own - Jenn's pilgrimage soon becomes more than just walking: a chance to reconnect and excavate, to re-engage with the act of caring for others and for oneself. But the walk's tricky terrain is not the only thing standing in Jenn's way. As days go by, her balance begins to fail her and the act of putting one foot in front the other becomes a new exercise in caution. When a vicious heatwave forces her to pause her expedition and gives her an opportunity to investigate the new limitations of her body, Jenn is confronted with a life-altering diagnosis - and a new path of self-discovery. About the author: Jenn Ashworth was born in Preston and studied at Cambridge and Manchester. Her novels include A Kind of Intimacy, The Friday Gospels and Fell. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2018.
